This Mummified Garlic Bread is a tasty and super simple way to dress up your dinner table for Halloween.
I have a really great garlic bread recipe on my blog. In fact I call it The World’s Best Garlic Bread. The secret ingredient is dry toasted garlic cloves. Read more about that HERE.

With Halloween candy and costume sales expected to break a record this year I wanted to post a savory recipe for Halloween instead of a sweet one. The amount of candy that comes into our house after Trick-or-Treat is kind of insane. Except for the Reese’s cups – we can never have too many of those!
So I decided to makeover my garlic bread into mini mummies. I found some smaller loaves (demi or half-sized baguettes) in the bakery section of my grocery store and used the same delicious topping as I always do – made with toasted garlic, butter, freshly grated Parmesan, salt and pepper. Yes pepper. Trust me.
Then I pulled apart some string cheese to function as the wrappings for my mummies.
And I used black olive slices for the eyes. These were so simple and quick to make but they make a really big visual impact. You could serve them with “blood” (tomato soup) or “worms and eyeballs” (spaghetti and meatballs) for dinner. And you and your kids will think it’s an appropriately macabre meal.

Mummified Garlic Bread
Ingredients
- 8 medium garlic cloves skins left on
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter softened
- 2 tbsp Parmesan cheese grated
- 1/2 tsp salt
- black pepper
- 2 demi baguettes
- 6 string cheeses
- 16 black olive slices
Instructions
- Adjust oven rack to lower-third position and heat to 500 degrees.
- Toast garlic cloves in a small skillet over medium heat, shaking pan occasionally, until fragrant and color of cloves deepens, about 8 minutes.
- When garlic cloves are cool enough to handle, skin and mince or press cloves through a garlic press. Using a dinner fork, mash garlic, softened butter, Parmesan cheese, salt, and pinch of pepper in a bowl until thoroughly combined.
- Cut each of the small baguette slices in half lengthwise and then again in half crosswise so you have eight halves. Spread the cut side of each of the eight halves with the prepared garlic butter.
- Thinly peel apart the string cheeses. Place two slices of black olives on each half for eyes and then place the pieces of string cheese in layers on top of the bread halves to look like mummies.
- Transfer the halves, buttered and cheese side up, onto a baking sheet. Bake at 500 degrees for 6 - 8 minutes, until the cheese is melted and just beginning to brown. Serve immediately.

I love this idea. However, my family like olives. Any suggestion for an alternative?

Use small pieces of fresh bell pepper that you cut up as eyes… then you have your choice of red, yellow, orange or green!
