For deep-fried chicken wings at home, simply baked in your oven, the secret ingredient is baking powder. This is by far the easiest recipe for oven bake delicious wings at home. They are baked from frozen! It takes some time of course. But these are the crispiest chicken wings and they’re just perfect. Once baked, toss them with your favorite wing sauce. Or my own sauce recipe, which is a combo of spicy garlic and hot honey. They are so, so good. And perfect for game day!

Ingredients for chicken wings recipe
- Frozen Chicken Wings – This recipe is written for one 40-ounce bag of grocery store frozen chicken wings. The recipe can easily be doubled or tripled for a crowd.
- Baking Powder – There is a science behind this. Baking powder (not baking soda) coated wings mimic deep fried chicken wings. The skin becomes incredibly crispy perfection like with deep frying.
- Frank’s RedHot Sauce – I’ve only tested this recipe with Frank’s hot sauce. I don’t think there’s a substitute.
- Butter – A little melted butter goes a long way to make these wings taste like your favorite takeout.
- Honey – The sweetness of the honey helps to round out the spicy flavors in the sauce.
- Garlic Powder – I love garlicky flavor with my hot wings. You could also use fresh garlic cloves instead of garlic powder if you prefer.
- Red Pepper Flakes – I wanted to mimic the flavor of hot honey. You could substitute the flakes with a 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Or leave it out if you want a more mild sauce.
- Blue Cheese Dressing – I love dipping my wings and a side of celery sticks (and/or carrot sticks) in blue cheese. But you can use Ranch dressing if you prefer.
Instructions for crispy chicken wings
Your oven is doing most of the work for this chicken wing recipe. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Place an oven-safe wire rack on top. Add the baking powder to the bag of wings and shake well to combine. Evenly space the wings on top of the metal cooking rack. Bake the wing for 80 minutes. Increase the temperature to 400 degrees F and flip the wings over. Cook for an additional 20 minutes. Flip them over again and cook for an additional 20 minutes, or longer if you want the wings super crispy and browned.
Be sure to check the temperature of your wings. Chicken wings are safe to eat once they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Toss the wings in a large bowl with your favorite sauce. Or use my buffalo wing sauce recipe. For full list of ingredients, detailed instructions and free printable recipe card, keep scrolling to the bottom of this post.
Pro tips
- These chicken wings are baked from frozen, so plan ahead. Once your wings are coated with the baking powder, the oven does all the work for you!

- Also be sure and arrange the baking powder coated chicken wings in a single layer on the oven rack.
- Wings are very forgiving. If you like really golden brown and crispy skin, just keep baking!
- Bake several recipes of wings and toss each sheet pan in different sauces. These baked wings are customizable for anyone.

Storage directions
Store the cooked chicken wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Or store then in the freezer for up to one month. Reheat the chicken wings in the oven at 400 degrees F.

I can not thank you enough for posting this. I love Wings but have struggled with finding a simple way to crisp up some frozen wings and pretty much gave up. I stumbled on your recipe post on a recent Google attempt. Long story short, I’ve had wings at home 4 weeks straight and staring down week 5. Thank you so very much!!. I have subscribed to your email list and looking forward to digging into your site/recipes to see what else you have in store!.Maybe there is something else I make that you have improved! Take care!

Just made them and used Texas Pete sauce,
Frank’s sweet chili and used garlic powder since I didn’t have the other along with the maple syrup and salt. The wings were great!! I ate them without sauce and they were perfect. My husband loves the sauce. Thanks.

Ok, so being a Buffalonian. I thought.. I’m going to try this recipe. I went a bit much with coating the wings pre bake. That was my mistake. Next time I will knock some of the baking power off. The wings came out looking awesome ! Now let’s talk sauce ! I love making sauces ! I mixed up the sauce that you use, some store brand honey bbq sauce, a stick of butter with a healthy tablespoon of Cayenne Pepper . Once heated up well… I let it stand for about half an hour, then back on the heat and bring it back up to a slow boil. Mixed up some corn starch and water to thicken the sauce up to about gravy consistency. The thicker sauce really works well for the folks I serve to. My opinion on this recipe ? Loved it ! Easy to make and everyone enjoyed the wings ! Thank you for sharing with us !
foodtasticmom says
Your version of the sauce sounds fantastic. I’m a fan of heat – but my daughter needs it toned down a bit 🙂 This is such a great review. I really appreciated you taking the time to write. You’re welcome!
