These Christmas Tree Cupcake Toppers are a simple and festive way to decorate a dozen cupcakes for the holidays. Made with pretzel sticks, candy melts and sprinkles.
I don’t know why but the older I’ve gotten the less patience I have for complicated baking projects. I’ll bake a simple cake but not decorate it. Or I’ll make some cute decorations like these Christmas Tree Cupcake Toppers, but I’ll probably not also have time to bake a batch of cupcakes from scratch to go with them. Maybe it’s because my kids are older and so busy. My driving duties take priority.

How to make Christmas Tree Cupcake Toppers:
- Purchase candy melts like these and melt according to package directions
- Place the melted candy melt chocolate into a zippered bag
- Cut a very small hole in one corner of the bag
- Place pretzel sticks on a cutting board or sheet pan lined with parchment paper
- Pipe the melted chocolate onto the pretzel sticks in the shape of Christmas trees
- Decorate with candy sprinkles
- Allow the trees to harden and then gently remove them from the parchment paper
- The toppers can be made up to two days in advance – keep them in an airtight container until ready to use.

Beautiful, Jill! I love the way these look — so classy, yet I don’t think it would be difficult to make them. Thanks for the idea!

These would be pretty on the side of a cake.

Yes, they definitely would!

Did you use food coloring for the colors. You didn’t say anything about that in your directions! And how much?
foodtasticmom says
No food coloring. I purchased Wilton candy melts to make these, so the color was already in the melted chocolate.

Do you think these would freeze/thaw well? Thanks!
foodtasticmom says
They are kind of delicate. I’d freeze them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper first and then place them in an air tight storage container after they are frozen. Let me know if you try it!

This is not as easy as it looks 😅 tried it tonight and the melts do not melt the way I expected. Do you have any tips? I added butter to make the mixture more runny but it still didn’t turn out as smooth as expected. Had to shape the slop into trees with a spoon 🤣🤷♀️
foodtasticmom says
If you microwave the melts in one minute intervals, and stir after each minute, once it’s warm enough it should be very smooth. If there’s any water in the bowl or on your spoon, sometimes that will make the chocolate seize up. Also, I put a small amount in the bag and if it hardens before I’m finished, I microwave more chocolate and start with a new bag. Also, cutting a small hole in the bag vs. a bigger one makes the chocolate easier to control. I hope that helps!

I absolutely love these. Two questions, though. Is the back side “ugly” so that only the front side should show … in other words, should I avoid using these as part of a place setting since guests at the other side of the table would see the rear of others’ toppers? Second, where did you find the cute, little stars for the treetops? Thanks.
foodtasticmom says
Great question! Yes, the backside doesn’t quite look like the front so they are best displayed from their “good” side. 🙂 And the stars were part of a sprinkles mix I found at my local Michael’s craft store.
